I wasn’t going to get another Gehl.
The fact that we’ve always run them didn’t seem like a compelling enough reason. But with over 12,500 hours on our trusty but tired 5640, it was time to make a decision.
I test drove several, looked up spec sheet after spec sheet, had a detailed spreadsheet of my top criteria, talked to people that run a lot of skid steers, and found a few workable options.
Then I stopped in to Helm Truck and Equipment after hours on a Saturday and looked at the new v210. It has a completely redesigned style including a much more accessible engine compartment, improved quick attach, and a cab that is easier to get in and out of. Many of its features seemed both easier to access and maintain than previous versions.
The following week, Brad brought it directly to the farm for me to test drive. I was able to put it through its paces and make sure it did all the things I needed it to do and fit where I needed it to fit.
I don’t need anything fancy, but the interior of this cab is a real treat. It has a comfortable air ride seat, foot rest for my short legs, and pilot controls. If you’ve ever had to drive with foot controls and a toddler (or two) on your lap you may share my appreciation for a better alternative.
My favorite new feature is the folding overhead door. You can have it up or down with ease and at will. No more fighting with the door when you have a bale in front of you and you need to open a gate. If it’s nice out, or I’m getting in and out a lot, I can leave it open. When it’s windy or hot or cold I can just pull it down and turn on the temperature controls. It locks in place automatically and doesn’t rattle!
It also has a backup camera for the safety of children, gates, and waylaid toys and tools alike.
I have good relationships with a few equipment service providers in the area, but I have confidence Helm will be sticking around and will continue to provide prompt and reliable service when needed.
Oh, and did I mention the hydraglide technology?! It’s basically shock absorbers on the arms of the skid that help spill less feed and make for a smoother, more comfortable ride.
Granted, we are still in the honeymoon phase at only 30 hours, but I’m finding a lot to love on this machine right down to the cup holder!
And yes, it has the same durable, powerful engine we’ve relied on for as long as I can remember.
Here’s to the next 12,500 hours!
Thanks, Brad and Jake, for the excellent salesmanship during this process!
